Thank you for coming to EMF 2014. Please do the following:

There are a number of roles that will need to be filled during the festival. We're still working on the software for assigning volunteer roles/shifts but below is an outline of what each role will involve to help you decide which teams you would like to sign up for.

To register on the volunteer system, please use this form.

There will also be a sign-up sheet in the Volunteer/Info tent during the festival with details of the roles that still need to be filled, so if you find yourself with a spare few minutes do pop over and see what's available

Team Description Skills and requirements

Bar

Bar volunteers will be responsible for service and upkeep of the bar area. This will involve:

  • Handling money
  • Operating the festival till system (training will be provided for this)
  • Pouring pints (we can train you to do this :) )
  • Tidying the bar area
  • Customer service skills
  • Ability to deal with busy situations
  • A reasonable level of sobriety
  • Able to work in a team

You should expect to be standing for the duration of your shift as there are no provisions for sitting behind the bar.

Lounge - Friday only

Volunteers will be needed to get crafty! The lounge needs to be decorated so we're looking for anyone willing to help out!

  • Creative spirit!

Info desk

This will be the main point of contact for any queries that people might have during the festival. Volunteers will be needed to look after the desk and help provide information to people as and when they need it.

  • Customer service skills
  • Ability to work alone
  • Sober if possible

Volunteer Team Assistant

This will be the point of contact for anyone wishing to sign up to Volunteering during the festival. There'll be a list of available roles and shifts for you to refer to and you may be needed to assist the Info Desk Volunteer in their duties during busy times.

  • Customer service skills
  • Ability to work alone
  • Sober if possible

Security

Security volunteers will be responsible for the safe-guarding of the site. This will involve:

  • Attending the front gate
  • Roving the site to ensure festival goers are safe and that no breaches in the Code of Conduct and site rules occur
  • Operating the site lock-up

Please note that we will need volunteers in this role 24 hours a day and so we will need people to work the 'graveyard shift' too.

  • Knowledge of site rules (which we can brief you on)
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • A reasonable level of fitness

It is likely that you will be standing for a good portion of your shift.

Stages

Volunteers will be needed to operate the mixing desks and to help speakers set up and get their laptops connected to the system.

  • Some knowledge of A/V is desirable but not required
  • Attend an induction course which will occur daily before doing a shift
  • Sober would be preferred

Content

Volunteers will be needed to help keep the talk schedule running smoothly. This will involve:

  • Helping speakers get to the correct stage
  • Helping speakers set up for their talk
  • Introducing the speaker to the audience
  • Making sure speakers stick to the schedule.
  • Be able to easily move around the site.
  • Spend time watching specific talks as required.
  • Have a way of telling the time and communicating this to speakers effectively should you need to.

Transport

Volunteers will be needed to:

  • Meet and greet festival goers at the train station and direct them to the minibus pick-up point
  • Meet and greet festival goers at the minibus drop-off point outside the festival entrance and direct them to the front gate
  • Help direct cars and caravans to the parking area
  • Assist vehicles in parking
  • Spatial awareness
  • Ability to handle varying traffic volumes
  • Ability to communicate with other teams
  • Ability to give clear directions to drivers as to where to park
  • Able to work in a team
  • Must be sober

Kids

Specifically the Nanotechs Workshop Tent. Volunteers will be general assistants for whoever is running the workshop helping with:

  • whatever the activity is
  • doing any running around needed
  • register activities

For workshops with under-8s, parents/carers will be required to be present, so you won't be directly responsible for very young kids.

  • Anyone DBS-checked within the past 3 years is of particular interest to the team, and it would be useful if you could please have your DBS certificates (physical or electronic copy) handy when you meet the team on site.
  • Not all the volunteers need to be DBS checked to help with this team, so if you feel you can be of help do please sign up!

General

There will a variety of ad-hoc tasks that will need doing to help with the smooth running of the festival. Many of these will require shorter shifts than other roles so even if you only have a few minutes to spare do come and see if you can be of assistance! We will need help with:

  • Restocking toilet rolls in the toilets
  • Emptying rubbish bins
  • Periodic checks of the toilets, and notifying us if there are any problems
  • Morning and afternoon checks of the showers to ensure they are working, that hot water is running and that there are no issues with them
  • Ability to move around site
  • Cleaning skills
  • Handling of cleaning products with basic personal protective equipment ie. rubber gloves
  • Ability to carry sacks of rubbish
  • Potentially working alone

First aid

There will be a dedicated First Aid Team for the duration of the festival. All volunteers with this team will need a valid First Aid qualification. If you would like to volunteer with our First Aiders then please get in touch.

  • First Aid at Work Qualification (3 days) or equivalent, Health Care Professional or Red Cross / SJA FA.
  • Minimum of two, 8 hour shifts
  • Must be sober

If you have any queries please contact us at volunteer@emfcamp.org.
