Things to during EMF
Radio Village Workshops/Talks
We plan on running some small talks/workshops on a fairly informal basis, these will include:
* Introduction to software defined radio - Dominic
* Something TBD - Paul
* Amateur Radio: The Original Nerd Hobby - Ryan Sayre (2E0RYS / KG7NMC)
* YOUR_TALK_HERE

Contests
During EMF the following contests will be running

http://www.hornucopia.com/contestcal/contestdetails.php?ref=99

http://www.hornucopia.com/contestcal/contestdetails.php?ref=98

Special Event Station
Paul (M0OKE) has applied for an NoV for a special call sign for a special event station, GB2EMF.

This has been granted.

Colin (G8TMV) has organised RSGB posters and info leaflets.

Talk In
Talk in will be happening on 2m on Friday and will possibly continue intermittently throughout the weekend. Operator(s) required. This will take place on 145.550 MHz.

Modes & Bands
Steve M0SPN intends to run voice on HF. VHF/UHF dependent on availability of masts and beams.

Iain MM6MVQ will have an SSTV receiving station operating during EMF on 70cm that will upload recieved images to the Internet. For details on this, see the 57North village page.

Local Stuff
Clubs
* Milton Keynes ARS (MKARS) are literally just up the road from the campsite - http://www.mkars.org.uk/

Repeaters
It would be very cool to have a dedicated on-site repeater just for EMF. The practicality wouldn't be too difficult -- M0RND can provide a 2m/70cm colinear (which might be able to be hosted on the main EMF mast), and there's no shortage of radios which can do cross-band repeat, or something could be lashed up with two Baofeng UV-B5 radios and a diplexer.

The awkward part would be getting an NoV for the repeater, and getting it in time for EMF.

Amateur Radio Village Feedback
What Went Well
* The tent was friendly and there were a lot of interested people dropping in and exchanging knowledge. Irl (talk) 19:26, 5 September 2014 (UTC)

What Didn't
* No one sent any SSTV to my recieving station. That probably could have been planned a lot better. Irl (talk) 19:26, 5 September 2014 (UTC)

Ideas for 2016
* Get the whole camp mapped out using APRS. i.e. where the villages are, etc.
** Get all the Hams on site with portable APRS setup
** We're looking at a cheap FOXTRAK :: APRS Tracker setup
* Throw some packets at the ISS / other amateur satellite things
* Foundation/intermediate practical workshops
* EME?
* Computer Logging (maybe adding to CloudLog online logbook see [here http://logbook.m3php.com/2e0sql/])
* Website/Blog
Irlhttps://wiki-archive.emfcamp.org/2014/w/index.php?title=Villages:57North/2014&diff=3651Villages:57North/20142014-09-05T23:15:55Z
Irl: /* The Travel Project */

During the drive from Aberdeen to EMF, irl MM6MVQ and hibby MM3ZRZ will be on-the-air on either a 5W handheld or 10W mobile. We will be using either M(M)6MVQ/M or M(M)3ZRZ/M depending on who it is operating the radio and which country we are in at that point in the journey. We will QSL (direct) for contacts made during the journey if requested.

On the journey to EMF we were indeed on the air using irl's Baofeng UV-5R and a magmount 2m/70cm antenna on the roof. On our journey we spoke to:
The Village
When we arrived our spot already had tents in it. This was to be expected as we only arrived at around 6pm and others had been there since very early that morning. We found enough room to get our tents pitched and got set up.

It was only on Saturday that we got our power and data hooked up (thanks to the guy that let us hang our power off his tent as the Datenklo was full) and we did then get the toastie maker and various battery-powered devices that desperately needed charging plugged in.

We very quickly discovered that we were missing two things: lights and tables. The table that we had was devoted to kitchen things in order to keep the food off the ground and to set up the radio equipment we had we taped up the ends of the gazebo box and let the equipment sit on that. It did turn out to be quite a nice table although it was difficult to operate the equipment without sitting on the floor.

For lighting, we tied a couple of torches to the gazebo poles and then added some reflectors into the roof. It worked enough that no one got trodden on but it left a lot of room for improvement.

We didn't really spend enough time in our village for it to be worth putting too much effort into it. The Cisco IP phone we had for our fieldphone extension was never even plugged in, but as irl was the only other person with a phone and SIM it probably wouldn't have been much use to us.

campGND was originally intended as a trial run for an event like EMF but after what we had learnt from campGND a lot of things in the plan had changed and there were now a lot of new bugs to iron out. Everything stayed waterproof and no equipment was lost or damaged and so it could have been a lot worse, but we will definitely be making a few changes the next time we attend a hacker camp.
Video Streaming and Lightning Talk
adventureloop streamed Stage C on Saturday using HTTP Live Streaming, an HTTP-based media streaming communications protocol implemented by Apple Inc. as part of their QuickTime, Safari, OS X, and iOS software.

Whilst the official streaming organised by volunteers from the BBC worked great on desktop platforms, it wasn't so good on mobile platforms. Both Android and iOS have built in support for HTTP Live Streaming and so it was possible on Saturday for mobile users to view some of the talks. On desktop platforms, it was also possible to view the streams using VLC.

During the lightning talks session on Saturday, adventureloop gave a talk about HTTP Live Streaming and why, even though there is already streaming provided, it can sometimes be a good idea to duplicate effort and reinvent the wheel in order to have progress.

Adventuremate
We will be making and giving away a club mate 'like' adventureMate. A drink released under a CC0 license, available for all to make their own with simple equipment. adventureloop and hibby will be producing batches of the mate throughout the weekend.

This happened. The recipie can be found here.
SSTV Recieving Station
To encourage a bit of SSTV at EMF, irl will be running an SSTV recieving station that will be uploading images recieved to the Internet. Depending on the amount of free time irl has, these will either just be on a webpage, or also tweeted to a dedicated Twitter account too.

Whilst the station was set up, not enough effort was put into getting the word out and it wasn't used. Next time there will need to be more collaboration with the amateur radio village and the Twitter integration really would be good for getting the project noticed and generating interest.

The station did work perfectly though and the two images sent by irl and hibby were successfully uploaded to the Internet.

Everything stayed waterproof and no equipment was lost or damaged and so it could have been a lot worse, but we will definitely be making a few changes the next time we attend a hacker camp.

adventureloop streamed Stage C on Saturday using HTTP Live Streaming, an HTTP-based media streaming communications protocol implemented by Apple Inc. as part of their QuickTime, Safari, OS X, and iOS software.

During the lightning talks session on Saturday, adventureloop gave a talk about HTTP Live Streaming and why, even though there is already streaming provided, it can sometimes be a good idea to duplicate effort and reinvent the wheel in order to have progress.
It was only on Saturday that we got our power and data hooked up (thanks to the guy that let us hang our power off his tent as the Datenklo was full) and we did then get the toastie maker and various battery-powered devices that desperately needed charging plugged in.
Find out what really happened in 2014 here.

57North is a hacker collective with a shared space (known as the hacklab, hackspace, hackerspace, or simply just the space) located in Aberdeen, Scotland. We meet regularly to share knowledge, hack on projects together, and build community.

Infrastructure
There will be a central communal tent that will contain power and wired data connections.

Phone
A Cisco 7940G phone will be connected to the EMF phone network on extension 53964.

Travel Project
During the drive from Aberdeen to EMF, irl MM6MVQ and hibby MM3ZRZ will be on-the-air on either a 5W handheld or 10W mobile. We will be using either M(M)6MVQ/M or M(M)3ZRZ/M depending on who it is operating the radio and which country we are in at that point in the journey. We will QSL (direct) for contacts made during the journey if requested.

You will be able to track our journey (where we are in range of an IGate) as we will be transmitting APRS position reports. The callsigns for this will be MM6MVQ-9 while in Scotland and M6MVQ-9 in England.

The equipment that will be used for APRS is still to be decided, but hopefully it will be possible for this to also be message capable.

Projects
Club Mate
We will be making and giving away a club mate 'like' adventureMate. A drink released under a CC0 license, available for all to make their own with simple equipment. adventureloop and hibby will be producing batches of the mate throughout the weekend.

SSTV Receiving Station
To encourage a bit of SSTV at EMF, irl will be running an SSTV recieving station that will be uploading images recieved to the Internet. Depending on the amount of free time irl has, these will either just be on a webpage, or also tweeted to a dedicated Twitter account too.

Things you could SSTV:

* cool hacks
* people having fun (but only if the people consent to having their photo broadcasted on the air and then uploaded to the Internet)
* pictures of cats

I've managed to do SSTV using nothing but an Android phone, 3.5mm jack lead and a Baofeng UV-5R so you have no excuses for not getting involved.

The station will be listening on:

433.4000 MHz U272; IARU Region 1 SSTV (FM/AFSK)

Before sending an image, point out that you're going to do so on the 2m general chat channel that will be advertised on the GB2EMF tent. This allows others to also recieve your lovely cat pictures.

Martin 1 should be used for this as that's where I've had the best results in testing. The station will be set to automatically detect though, so it will pick up Scottie 1 too.

If you have any ideas or suggestions, let irl know.

Will-it-Toast?
Hibby Will have his beloved 3-in-1 toastie maker, and recording segments for his planned webseries "Will it Toast?" (working title).

If you've got any food you'd like to try in a toastie-format, come along and try it out!

Things that have previously been toastified to great effect:

* Mince
* Curry
* Cheese and/or Ham

The toastie maker comes with two other convenient functions also! Waffle plates and a George Foreman style grill.

Pizza has been reheated using the waffle plates to great effect, and the foreman style grill has been used to cook mince at a surprisingly rapid pace. Come along with your own ideas and we can mull them over!

All food is, of course, provided with no warranty, guarantee and is eaten at your own risk. If you get ill because your toastie idea was stupid/unworkable/raw/unhealthy, I accept no responsibility for the ill effects.
We were also transmitting APRS position reports although unfortunately they were not via RF but only via APRS-IS. Here you can see a map of our journey:
When we arrived our spot already had tents in it. This was to be expected as we only arrived at around 6pm and others had been there since very early that morning. We found enough room to get our tents pitched and got set up.

It was only on Saturday that we got our power and data hooked up (thanks to the guy that let us hang our power off his tent as the Datenklo was full) and we did then get the toastie maker and various battery-powered devices that desperately needed charging plugged in.
Things to during EMF
Radio Village Workshops/Talks
We plan on running some small talks/workshops on a fairly informal basis, these will include:
* Introduction to software defined radio - Dominic
* Something TBD - Paul
* Amateur Radio: The Original Nerd Hobby - Ryan Sayre (2E0RYS / KG7NMC)
* YOUR_TALK_HERE

Contests
During EMF the following contests will be running

http://www.hornucopia.com/contestcal/contestdetails.php?ref=99

http://www.hornucopia.com/contestcal/contestdetails.php?ref=98

http://www.hornucopia.com/contestcal/contestdetails.php?ref=101

* Voice - GB3VA http://ukrepeater.net/my_repeater.php?id=997

* Digital - http://www.ukrepeater.net/repeaters/maps/gb7bp.jpg

* cool hacks
* people having fun (but only if the people consent to having their photo broadcasted on the air and then uploaded to the Internet)
* pictures of cats

* cool hacks
* people having fun (but only if the people consent to having their photo broadcasted on the air and then uploaded to the Internet)
* pictures of cats

Hello. I'm Iain.

I'm a researcher at the University of Aberdeen, a member of 57North Hacklab and a licensed radio amateur with the callsign MM6MVQ (although it will be M6MVQ in England).

I will be travelling from Aberdeen to attend EMF and will be living in the 57North Hacklab village. You can find information on some of the projects I'll be involved in on the 57North Hacklab village wiki page.
Irlhttps://wiki-archive.emfcamp.org/2014/w/index.php?title=File:Irl_face.jpg&diff=3189File:Irl face.jpg2014-08-27T21:37:31Z
Irl:

Radio Village Workshops/Talks
We plan on running some small talks/workshops on a fairly informal basis, these will include:
* Introduction to software defined radio - Dominic
* Something TBD - Paul
* Amateur Radio: The Original Nerd Hobby - Ryan Sayre (2E0RYS / KG7NMC)
* YOUR_TALK_HERE
Special Event Station

SSTV Receiving Station
To encourage a bit of SSTV at EMF, I will be running an SSTV recieving station that will be uploading images recieved to the Internet. Depending on the amount of free time irl has, these will either just be on a webpage, or also tweeted to a dedicated Twitter account too.

Things you could SSTV:

* cool hacks
* people having fun (but only if the people consent to having their photo broadcasted on the air and then uploaded to the Internet)
* pictures of cats

I've managed to do SSTV using nothing but an Android phone, 3.5mm jack lead and a Baofeng UV-5R so you have no excuses for not getting involved.

The station will be listening on:

433.4000 MHz U272; IARU Region 1 SSTV (FM/AFSK)

Before sending an image, point out that you're going to do so on the 2m talk-in. This allows others to also recieve your lovely cat pictures.
Things to during EMF
Contests
During EMF the following contests will be running

Special Event Station
Paul (M0OKE) has applied for an NoV for a special call sign for a special event station, GB2EMF.

This has been granted.

Colin (G8TMV) has organised RSGB posters and info leaflets.

Talk In
Talk in has been suggested on 2/70 on Friday. Operator(s) required. Assuming 145.550 MHz.

Modes & Bands
Steve M0SPN intends to run Voice, PSK and SSTV on HF. VHF/UHF dependent on availability of masts and beams.

Local Stuff
